India and Russia are planning for a joint venture to produce dual band GPS / GLONASS global positioning receivers for civilian and military use. GPS receivers are used for land and marine navigation throughout the world.

“We are actively working on a project to establish a joint venture on Indian territory to produce various navigation equipment. In March a group of our negotiators will head there for another round of talks,” CEO of Navigation and Information Systems (NIS) Alexander Gurko said.

GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the Russian equivalent of the US controlled GPS.

Earlier, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had said he would discuss cooperation in the GLONASS project with Indian leaders.

Russia is the leader in precision homing equipment that is a part of the military segment of its GLONASS. And, India has become the first country to ink a deal with Russia to get the access of the GLONASS.

At present, Russia operates a total of 22 GLONASS satellites in orbit and it expects to put about 24 satellites to provide navigation services worldwide.
